The Chinese language classes we took at Langara were fun, interesting and our teacher was excellent. We took beginning classes where we learned how to read and write hundreds of characters, proper pronunciation and tones, many useful phrases and idioms, and a little about Chinese culture, philosophy and geography. We have used our new skills to communicate with our Mandarin speaking in-laws, friends and neighbours, as well as shopkeepers, restaurant staff and many others. People appreciate our efforts to speak their language and understand their culture. This has helped us make new friends and forge deeper connections. We are very pleased with the Langara Chinese Program and recommend their courses to anyone interested in learning Mandarin.

I truly cherish the opportunity to take a Classical Chinese course while studying abroad. The twice-weekly classes feel like a piece of home to me. Revisiting the same texts I studied in my youth, I now find that, with a more mature perspective, they evoke completely new insights. For example, when we read poems about poets who have been away from home for many years, I can finally relate to their longing and feel the beauty of classical Chinese on a deeper level. This course is meaningful and enriching—it brings me joy and calm, allowing me to connect with the inner worlds of ancient poets. Studying Classical Chinese in a foreign country adds a unique dimension to the experience. The classmates are also very warm and welcoming. If you’re looking to make some Chinese friends, I highly recommend joining the class!
